The trio Det Yderste Hav (The Outermost Sea) hail from the island of Fanø in Western Denmark and play the traditional music of the island and its neighbouring islands in a unique new version. Combining Peter Uhrbrands violin, which spans the range from the strong pulse of the traditional fiddle to free experimentation, the guitar stylings of classical guitarist Jørgen Bjørslev, who also knows his jazz. blues and rock'n'roll, and the contributions of writer Jeppe Brixvold as lyricist and expressive singer, Det Yderste Hav creates a musical form and style unlike any other, as is evident on the trio's debut album "Sønderhoninger" from 2015.
A "sønderhoning" is the name used for a distinctive kind of tune and folk dance that has been performed in the town of Sønderho on Fanø for 300 years now, and which has remained a vibrant and crucial element of the local community even today. It is also the term used do describe the people of Sønderho, where the men have braved the oceans of the world for centuries. Det Yderste Hav endeavours to explore this vital, dynamic cultural identity from a contemporary perspective, and the result is music that is firmly rooted in history while also evoking an intense atmosphere of the entirely unexpected and enchanting.
